Born in Seilers Haus, Wunderthausen, became tenant in Auf der Laye, but then went with his family to America. They had two daughters named Elisabeth Amalia, one born in 1822, one in 1826. One would assume that the first daughter died as an infant, but there is no death record in Wunderthausen. Most of the living family--save for Henry and Louis--were aboard the "Carl" when it arrived in New Orleans from Bremen on October 13, 1858.

The following is from "Vital Historical Records of Jackson County, Missouri 1826-1876" published in 1934 by the Kansas City Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, Kansas City, Missouri:

THE KNOCHE BURYING GROUND
(Washington Township)

"The head of this family who came to America and to Jackson County, Missouri, a few years prior to the Civil War, was Johannes Franz KNOCHE, who with his wife, Elizabeth STROCHBINE KNOCHE, were born, reared and married in Prussia. Franz (Frank) KNOCHE was a soldier in the Prussian army before coming to America. In sections 28 and 29 in Washington Township the KNOCHE family purchased farm land in the locality known today as 140th and Holmes.

On this farm was a Family Burying Ground. This land was in the path of the fast-growing demand for smaller acreage and this old KNOCHE farm was sold. About the year 1916 "Jim" KNOCHE, a descendant of the immigrant ancestor, helped to remove all of the bodies which had been interred there, to the cemetery at Belton, Cass County, Missouri.

The following inscriptions were copied from the stones of members of this Jackson County family, which are found on the lot at the cemetery in Belton, Missouri:

Susan Lynn Riedesel, 49, of Central Ave, Brocton, NY, formerly of Westfield, died Friday, March 18, 2005 at Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk, New York after being stricken at home.

A Westfield area resident most all her life, she moved to Brocton 18 years ago. She was a 1973 graduate of Westfield Academy and Central Schools. She earned her Certification as a Nurses Aide from BOCES and attended JCC for nursing. She had been raised in the Westfield Baptist Church. She enjoyed Tri-Chem Painting, Photography, and her dog, Ashley, a miniature Daschound.
She had been employed by Chautauqua Opportunities doing home care nursing throughout Chautauqua County. She collected Precious Moments Dolls and Cherish Teddys Porcelain Dolls.

She was born February 11, 1956 in Westfield, New York the daughter of Virginia (Haskin) Riedesel with whom she made her home and the late Arthur Reidesel.

Survivors include her mother
Virginia M. (Haskin) Riedesel of Brocton, NY, her four brothers; Paul Riedesel of Canandaigua, NY, John Riedesel of Westfield, NY, Daniel Riedesel of Westfield, NY, and Ricky Riedesel of Eustis, FL, 10 Nieces and Nephews as well as 13 Great Nieces and Nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her father, Arthur P. Riedesel.

He was born in Seimes house in Wunderthausen. He came to New York on October 4, 1881, aboard the ship Salier out of Bremen. The age matches (25), and he was accompanied by a Georg Strackbein (age 24), almost certainly from Kurts house in Wunderthausen.

As of 1900 and 1910 he was farming in Woodbury County, Iowa, not far from several Strackbein families. I can find no trace of him in the 1920 Census, but he is in Osage County, Kansas, in 1930. He never married.

Henry died Intestate, and an acquaintance from Burlingame was appointed to sell his possessions and settle debts. Henry owned less than 10 acres of land and a few miscellaneous goods. The probate records suggest that he had moved to Burlingame only in recent years. After paying outstanding debts, the executor had $32.04 to distribute to five nephews and nieces (who had to be tracked down). Both of his sisters were deceased at the time of his death, or at least by the time his meager estate was settled in December 1933.

Born in Linde house, Wunderthausen, but took over Bormanns. His biography relates that he came (alone) to the U.S. in 1850 and settled in Illinois. But he then returned to Germany ("in the latter 50s") and went on to serve in both the Danish (1864) and Austrian (1866) wars with the Prussian army. The entire family emigrated to Miami County, Kansas in 1882 or 1883 but we are unsure of what ship they took.

The obituary implies that he left a wife behind in 1850. He and Elisabeth Amalia were married in Germany in 1857. Their first daughter was definitely born in 1853 (before their marriage) in Wunderthausen. He must only have stayed a couple of years in the U.S. the first time.

Lived initially in the Wheatland area. He was a lumber merchant in Denver, Iowa, for many years, though he moved to Waterloo about 1928. Mary Wilder had been his English teacher, apparently in Denver. In 1903, he and his wife and daughter Alice visited back in Germany.
