Riedesel Hermann [Male] b. ABT 1450

Earliest documented member of the Westphalian line of Riedesels. Had a knight's estate (Rittergut) in Olpe, near Meschede.

Peter Joseph Strange (1867) asserts that the son Hermann was a child of Bele rather than Catharina. This author goes on to attribute several other children to Catharina, but their known lifespans do not fit at all.

He had the unusual status of being a free man. Local legends as to his origins and status do not necessarily correspond to what is in the written record. In any case he was a man of some substance.

The house which he occupied came to be known as Kurts (or Curts) Haus locally, although it had been inhabited by his Homrighausen in-laws and before then by Eckharts.

Baptised as Ludwig but known as J. Louis in the US. He was born in Haase Haus in Wunderthausen but was brought to America before his fourth birthday. The extended family arrived in New York on June 7, 1845 and settled immediately in Crawford County, Ohio. His mother died 2-3 years later. His father did eventually remarry but the boy was taken care of by relatives in the meantime. They came to Wheatland in 1855.

It is possible that he owned a small farm in Section 2 of Spring Rock Township in Clinton County as of 1874. Some "L. Riedesel" did, though it could have been his father's as well. He went on to live near Battle Creek, Iowa where he was Vice President of the bank and a member of the city council in 1897. By 1920, they were living in Minnehaha County, South Dakota with their daughter, Bernice. That 1920 Census erroneously gives his age as "88."

Patrick Riedesel, age 63, of rural Cathay, North Dakota died at home on December 30th, 2010. Funeral was at the Catholic Church in Sykeston, N.D. and burial at Carrington, N.D. Pat was born March 25th, 1947 in Harvey, N.D. to Marvin and Rita Riedesel. He graduated from Cathay High School in 1965 and earned a degree in animal science from North Dakota State. He married Renee Boelke in Sept. of 1973. He worked at the Cathay Elevator, for the County Road Dept, and then in 1986 returned to the farm that his grandfather settled in 1905. He served on various boards and committees in the community. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Renee;
son Ryan (and Karen) Riedesel of Little Canada, Minnesota; daughter Erin (Riedesel) Erickson and husband Mike of Rochester, Minnesota; and one granddaughter. Patrick is also survived by his mother, brother Marv Riedesel and wife Mary of Prior Lake, Minnesota; brother Jeff Riedesel and wife Kristi of Carrington, N. D.; his twin sister Penny (Riedesel) Mindt and husband of Wisconsin; and his wife Renee's family of Carrington, N.D.

Lived near Tingley, Iowa, when first married but moved to Idalia, Colorado in 1887. At the time of the 1850 Census when he was a motherless 2-year old, John was living with the family of Christian Gerhardt (Frau Gerhardt was his father's aunt).

His son George's Social Security application (1936) gives John's middle name as Adolph rather than Albert. He also spelled his mother's name as Catherine rather than Katherine.

Lived in Denver, Colorado, and had a brokerage business there, but also lived in Battle Creek, IA, as early as 1893 when their daughter was born, and as late as 1906 when he is listed in a local directory. Could well be the "A. A. Riedesel" listed in an 1884 directory. The son, Jay, I have listed for J. Louis Riedesel might have been Albert's son instead. At the time of his baptism in 1862, he was referred to as "Martin Alfred."

He was known as Henry in America. Born in Bergmanns/Gabels Haus, Wunderthausen. Came to the U.S. aboard the ship "Auguste" out of Bremen. It landed in New Orleans on October 25, 1854. According to family recollections, he worked his way up the Mississippi as a mason and well-digger until he reached Davenport, Iowa. He and Florentine Schneider (also from Wunderthausen) were married and had their children in Wheatland, but they moved on in 1891 to what became Lanesboro, Iowa in Carroll County.

I believe that he owned land in section18 of the Spring Rock Township around Wheatland; his farm in Carroll County was in section 2 of the Jasper Township.

Born in the house Schreiners/Großeludwigs in Wunderthausen. Baptised as Philipp but known as Phillip John (or James) in this country. Came to the U.S. with his parents on the ship Argonaut out of Bremen. It arrived in New York on November 9, 1867. As an adult he lived in the Kansas City, Kansas area; in 1930 they lived in the Center township of Vernon County, Missouri. Several censuses list his place of birth as Iowa or Missouri, which is simply false. It does suggest the possibility that his parents lived for a while around Wheatland. In the same Census, his son Phillip reported his father's birthplace as Missouri! His grave marker says he died in 1940 but state records say 1941.

I find a 19-year old "John P Redzel" living with his widowed mother Elizabeth at Quindaro, Wyandotte County (Kansas City), Kansas in the 1880 Census.

The 1920 Census for St. Louis lists a sister Margaret H-something who was 17 and single. This does not compute. Albert's mother surely did not have another child after she was 50, and the last name does not make sense. This schedule suggests that he was already a widower, but in 1930 he had a wife Estelle and the same two daughters--and a mother-in-law in the home. Maybe Margaret was actually his sister-in-law. In 1930 he was a chauffeur for the school board. They paid $50/month in rent.
