It was during his life time that the peasants of Wunderthausen were able (and required) to purchase their houses and land from the Sayn-Wittgenstein family that had ruled Wittgenstein since the 1200s. This emancipation was a result of the Napoleonic Wars and subsequent Congress of Vienna in 1815 that concentrated the scores of small German states into a few larger ones.
