| A few Riedesel emigrants came to the U.S. from what was then the German province of Lothringen, now the area of Lorraine in France. The region was historically a mixture of German and French cultures, and sovereignty changed hands several times. These people actually had distant roots in Wittgenstein (Girkhausen to be precise), but I don’t think they had any contact with the Wittgenstein Riedesels. |  |
An ancestor had moved from Girkhausen to the area of Ebsdorf near Marburg in the 18th century. His descendants lived around today’s Leidenhofen, but a Peter Riedesel (b. 1839) worked as a skilled stone hewer (i.e. making cobblestones) around what is now France and the Low Countries. Diedenhofen (Thionville today) was the home base. Three of his children from his second marriage found new lives in America, as did a niece. They were:
