Known as George. Born in Haase Haus in Wunderthausen. He came to New York with his family, landing there on June 7, 1845. They all settled in Crawford County, Ohio. George went (further) west in 1852 with his brother, L. Henry, to buy land. He was naturalized on November 21, 1854, in Galion. As of the 1850 Census George was living on the farm of a Joseph Albright as a laborer; this was in the Whetstone township to the west of the other Riedesels.

Though he owned land at Wheatland, he and his wife apparently did not move there until around 1869. In 1873, his in-laws came to Wheatland as well. In fact, the Gerhardts bought land from George in 1873. George was quite active in buying and selling land. The main property and house were in Section 10 (extending into Section 3) of the Spring Rock Township.

GEORGE RIEDESEL, farmer, Sec. 10; P. 0. Wheatland owns 200 acres of land, valued at $55 per acre; son of Ludwig and Flora Riedesel; born January 12, 1825, in Germany. In 1845, emigrated to Crawford Co., Ohio; in 1850, came to Iowa, and entered the land upon which he now lives; in the spring of 1870, moved his family from Ohio, and located on his farm, Married Miss Elizabeth Gerhardt in February, 1860; she was born in Crawford Co., Ohio, in 1834 ; have six children living: Mary J., Anna M., Elizabeth S., Louisa L., John F., Louis T. ; lost one, John . Members of German Reformed Church."

Known as John. Born in Haase Haus in Wunderthausen. He came to America with his family, landing in New York on June 7, 1845. They went immediately to Crawford County, Ohio. John came to stay in Wheatland in 1857. As of the 1860 Census, he and his wife were living on the same farm as his brother, J. Ludwig. It shows his real estate holdings as being worth $1,704 (though he was a "farm laborer") while Ludwig's was only $540. John was the first of his brothers to become a naturalized citizen, doing so on October 19, 1852, in Galion.

John acquired his land by "patent" (directly from the federal government) in May 1854. He eventually had land in both Sections 3 and 4 of the Spring Rock Township.

The date of his death has been mis-recorded by me among others. Even his gravestone gives the wrong year (1909 instead of 1908). The best proof the December 9,1908 date is the obituary published a few days later in the Wheatland Gazette.

"The History of Clinton County, Iowa" by Lucius P. Allen published in 1879.
JOHN RIEDESEL, farmer-Sec. 3; P. 0. Wheatland ; owns 160 acres of land, valued at $50 per acre, son of Ludwig and Flora Riedesel; born March 31, 1829, in Germany; in 1845, emigrated with parents to Crawford Co., Ohio ; in 1853. came to Clinton Co., Iowa, and entered his land from Government, after which he returned to Ohio. remaining till the spring of 1857, when he returned to Iowa. Married Miss Elizabeth Knoche, July 7, 1869, ; she was born in Germany, in 1839 ; have six children: Dina, Ferdinand, Emma, Kate, Ann and an infant son not named. Member of the German Reformed Church; Democrat.

Funeral services for Melvin "Dutch" Rudolph Riedesel, 90, of Stanwood, formerly of Clarence who died Saturday, June 4, 2011 will be held Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Fry Funeral Home, Tipton. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 10, 2011 from 4-7:30 pm at Fry Funeral Home, Tipton. Burial will follow in the St. Paul Cemetery in Wheatland. A memorial has been established in his memory.

Melvin was born September 19, 1920, in Wheatland, Iowa. He was the son of Gustav and Emma Wolfe Riedesel. He attended various country schools and was a graduate of Stanwood High School. On April 17, 1943, Melvin was united in marriage to Evelyn Ruth Behrend in Tipton.

Melvin was employed as a truck mechanic for Kirchner Ford Garage in Clarence. He was a member of Jehovah's Witness in Anamosa.

Melvin is survived by his wife, Evelyn Riedesel of Stanwood, Iowa; daughter, Mary (Dan) Levsen of Clarence, Iowa; sons, Robert (Ronna) Riedesel of Clinton, Iowa, LeRoy (Glenda) Riedesel of Tipton, Iowa; 7 grandchildren, Brian, Lisa (Dana), Scott (Lisa), Lee, Chanel (Eric), Stafanie, Justin (Terri); and 9 great-grandchildren, Claudia, Gavin, Zane, Zeb, Zy, Aaron, Jaryn, Jianna, Jaden; and great-great-grandson, Owen Jewell. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Norman Riedesel.

Although her parents did not marry, Maria Amalia was apparently known as Riedesel. This was the name recorded at the time of her marriage. Her father's identity was acknowledged though what became of him is not known. Numerous other secondary sources give her name as Beitzel. This is not wrong in a technical sense but I am opting for the name she was evidently known by. She came with her husband, two children and the extended Riedesel family to New York, landing on June 7, 1845. We know only that she died in 1847-1848 in some kind of epidemic.

Three suggest 1885, and one suggests 1886. 1) His birth date in the 1900 Census was given as July of 1885, and this is the document most contemporary with his birth that I have; 2) he was said to be 33 when he died in October of 1918, also fitting an 1885 birth.; 3) he gave his date of birth on his marriage application as December (sic) 28, 1886.

On the other hand, his stated age was 23 in the April 1910 Census (hence suggesting he would turn 24 that July, given an 1886 birth).

And why would it be July in one place and December another? My only interpretation is that exact age was simply not as relevant a piece of information in those times as it is in our time of age-regulated obligations and privileges.
