Lena Smith and her daughter Margaret Smith were both victims of what came to be known as the "Ruskin Heights" tornado. According to the National Weather Service, this tornado remains the most deadly of the 300+ tornadoes recorded in this area since 1950. On May 20, 1957, the 71 mile long track of the Ruskin Heights tornado passed directly over the Martin City area, Ms. Smith's home at the time. Margaret died that same evening. Lena Smith died three months later as a result of complications from injuries sustained in that tornado
