Henry moved with his parents out to Iowa. His mother was dead as of the 1870 Census when they were still in Clinton County, but they moved on to Cherokee County the same year. He was the oldest child to stay in Iowa. Oddly, she is listed as "Lena Hahn" and the sister-in-law of Henry in the same house with him in the 1880 Census. The enumeration took place after they were married that month. It is likely that his farm was the farm his father and siblings occupied when they came to Cherokee County but I can find no records.

Known as George D. Born in Schreiners/Grosseludwigs Haus, Wunderthausen. Arrived in New York on the ship Hansa out of Bremen on October 27, 1865 (Captain H.J. Von Santen). He first lived on the farm of his brother John near Wheatland after coming to the US. Later he owned and farmed land with his other brothers, Louis D. and Henry D. Riedesel. Around 1900, he and his wife moved to Moore, Oklahoma. His tombstone is engraved with the birth date of November 27, 1844 (at odds with the birth record in Wunderthausen) and death date of December 21 (at odds with his death certificate).

Two sons and a daughter, Adele (known as Della), all unmarried, lived on the family farm.

Headline: Yorktown Woman Ends Her Life by Swallowing Acid
Despondent over failing health caused by a nervous breakdown, Mrs. Sophie Boldt ended her life Friday afternoon by taking a large quantity of carbolic acid. Neighbors found her dead in bed. Justice of the Peace B.L. Hausmann held an inquest and returned a verdict of suicide.

Mrs. Boldt, nee Sophie Riedesel was born in the Mill Creek section near LaGrange and came to Yorktown with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Riedesel, 58 years ago when she was only one year old. She was reared in Yorktown and received her education in the local public schools. Through intensive home study she prepared herself for the profession of teacher and later taught school at Meyersville and Garfield.

In 1910, she was married to William Boldt, who proceeded her to the grave in April 1922. She was Mr. Boldt’s second wife.

Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. C.M. Wagenschein of Yorktown and Mrs. Edwards Hoegermann of Los Angeles, California, two brothers William of Fresno and Charles of Los Angeles, California, besides a large number of step-children.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, interment being at Westside Cemetery. Rev. E.A. Saegbiel, pastor of the Lutheran Church, officiated. The floral offerings were profuse and very beautiful.

Georg Ludwig Riedesel was born May 13, 1817, in Wunderthausen in the house known as Wetzels. He was the eighth of nine recorded children of Johann Ludwig and Anna Elisabeth (Knoche) Riedesel.

An older sister, Catherine, came to live in Warren County, New Jersey in 1837. Ludwig's application for naturalization states that he arrived in 1841 and that is the year he received permission to emigrate. He married Caroline Schaeffer (probably Schäfer) around 1845. She was born August 16, 1824 in Germany. One source gives Wunderthausen as her place of birth but this is unlikely. No Schäfer daughter is recorded in the birth records at this time--and no Schäfer family even lived in the village. Nor were they married there.

Several of the Riedesels who settled in Warren County came to be known as Riddle or Radle. It's not that there weren't other Germans around who could pronounce (and spell) Riedesel correctly, but this seemed to be the rule. Ludwig (or Louis) farmed near what was called Oxford Furnace. Ludwig finally received his naturalization papers in 1854 as "Ludwig Readle" though his signature says "Riedesel." He is buried as "Ludwig Riddle."

They had at least seven children before Caroline died in 1867. Four of their children are buried with them. The family name of his second wife Catherine is not known to me. Some have identified her as another Riedesel/Riddle by birth but that is almost certainly in error. There were three children that we know of from the marriage with Catherine.

She never married. Unfortunately, she is often confused with the second wife of Georg Ludwig Riedesel (aka Ludwig Riddle, born in 1817) whose first name was also Catherine but whose last name is unknown. Catherine Riddle never married. There is a large monument to her in the Hazen Cemetery which is, again unfortunately, sometimes attributed to the other Catherine. The latter appears to have died by 1885.

Born in Beitzels Haus in Wunderthausen. Came to the US on the ship Everhard out of Bremen, landing in Baltimore on May 25, 1841. Two of his brothers were also aboard. His brief obituary implies that he never married and that he lived with a brother in Jackson County. He is probably in the household of Johann Philipp as of 1860. A Find-A-Grave record shows him married to Eufrazia Noland but that is not correct. She was married to a younger, American-born John Knoche who I have not precisely identified.
