Grew up in Dundee, IL, but lived in Woodstock. Was Lutheran. When he registered for the draft during World War I, he was employed by the Oliver Typewriter Company as a mechanic. Their home was at 527 Burbank in Woodstock.

Known as William. Came to the United States (from Canada) in 1864. An 1878 County directory lists him as a taxpayer, and as a laborer by occupation.

1900 Census gives his occupation as a day laborer, and his year of emigration as 1864. The three children except for Clara were living with them. (Kane County ,East Dundee Village, p. 13). The 1920 Census gives his place of birth as "Forpomin" which should have been "Vorpommern" or Pomerania in eastern Germany. His death certificate reads "Rietesel."

Wilm is spelling on Wilm/Riedesel marriage certificate and his name is spelled Riedsel. Spelling was Whelm in son George's obituary. Came to the US in 1870 according to the 1900 Census, at which time she was a factory worker. She became a citizen in 1871.
