Grew up in the Winner, White River and Norris areas. After their marriage they lived and ranched near Norris, South Dakota. Later they moved into Kadoka but continued to own and operate the ranch. In the early 1990’s they sold the ranch to their sons, Harry Merchen, Jr. and Widd Merchen. He was the longest-surviving of 13 siblings.

Letter from Ruth Laufer to Flossie in July 21, 1984 refers to Loretta Beth Philipp as his niece. Her mother was a Riedesel.

At the time of his death, George lived at 1324 N Washington Avenue in Batavia, IL. He worked for Burgess-Norton Manufacturing for 38 years and was a member of the Old Timers Club. A Baptist minister officiated at his funeral. In 1936 they were living in Aurora, IL.
