Almost certainly the Johannes Riedesel who was born in Försters am Lotzenberg house in Wunderthausen. He was known as John in America and was a stone mason.

There was a 20-year-old John Riedesel aboard the ship "Atlantic" which arrived in New York from Bremen on May 28,1866. His occupation is listed as "clerk." Also on this ship were a Knoche, another Riedesel, and two Homrighausen girls--some of whom match people born in Wunderthausen.

At the time of their daughter Emma's death in 1884, they lived at 1627 Carr in St. Louis.

Like her husband, Sophia located to the Wheatland area as a child. Family stories tell that she lived part of her childhood with her aunt and uncle Fiock. The latter had no children and it would not have been uncommon to "borrow" a young relative to help with the work of keeping house and farming. However, Sophia was enumerated in her parents' household in the 1870 Census. Her parents (and the aged Fiocks) moved to Glidden too.

Known as George, or John George. Born at Petersgrund near Wunderthausen, first came to the U. S. with his parents briefly in 1833 before returning to Wunderthausen. In 1845, the family came back to the U.S. We used to think they debarked in New Orleans but we now have record of them traveling on the ship Minna which landed in New York on October 4, 1845. According to Emma Wetter Hobbs, they settled near Sherrill, Iowa around 1847 (long known as Sherills Mound). This is where George and Sophia met and most of the large Wetter family remained. George had 80 acres of timberland at Sherrill.

George and his family moved to a farm in Sections 29 and 32 of the Liberty Township of Clinton County in 1861. As far as I know, no other Wetter family members came to the Wheatland area.

In November 1875 the land was sold to David and John Shoemaker, nephews of the second wife of L. Henry Riedesel (viz. Elisabeth Schumacher). George, Sophia and their children moved on to Glidden, Iowa in 1876 and spent the rest of their days there.

Born at Petersgrund (a single house near but not in Wunderthausen). What had been a single property was divided between Gabriel and his brother, Georg Ludwig. In 1833 Gabriel and his family went to America (Baltimore) where one of his brothers was already established as a merchant. This was almost certainly Gg. Hermann (b.1798). By the end of 1833 the family was back in Germany, petitioning the authorities for the right to resume their residence in Wittgenstein. Fortuitously, their possessions were still in the care of Schneider relatives. Family accounts have said that they first went to America in 1831 but archives in Germany include their petition in March 1833 to be allowed to leave.

Wunderthausen church records note that their daughter, Amalia, was born onboard the return ship. In 1845, he sold his interests in the property at Petersgrund to the "Prince" of Sayn-Wittgenstein in Berleburg. They came to the U.S. on the ship Minna out of Bremen, landing in New York on October 4, 1845 and were in Sherrill, Iowa, by 1847. Mrs. Hobbs reported that they came to New Orleans and then up the Mississippi. However, we have a passenger list from New York that identifies them beyond doubt. Maybe they took another boat to New Orleans rather than traveling overland.

Mrs. Hobbs says that he initially purchased 160 acres at $1.25 per acre. He later bought an adjoining 40 acres.

Veiock Johann Philip [Male] b. 30 DEC 1806 Vorderweidenthal, Südliche Weinstrasse, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany - d. OCT 1853 Iowa

Apparently came to the US in the late 1830s. The family began to use the Americanized spelling of Fiock sometime after that. Given the German spelling, the pronunciation would rhyme with eye-sock.

Vorderweidenthal is a village in the modern German state of Rheinland-Pfalz, though historically belonged to the kingdom of Bavaria. Unlike most of Bavaria, it was Protestant. The current population is just over 700. The Veiock name is extremely rare with only about ten families in Germany carrying it, all in the same area. Records of the name are reported back to the 1500s. This region was devastated as badly as any in the Thirty Years War (1681-1648), so it is a wonder the family survived.
