Paul R. Riedesel Sr., 83, of Davenport, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, in Davenport with his family at his side. Memorial services in celebration of his life will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church, 1140 E, High St., Davenport. A memorial gathering will be 4-7 p.m. today at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge, Davenport. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church in Davenport, of which he was an active member.

Paul was born in 1929 in Davenport, the son of George and Ella Riedesel. He grew up in Davenport and was a graduate of Davenport High and Augustana College. He served his country in the U.S. Navy, receiving his honorable discharge as a LTJG in 1956. Paul worked for the Army Weapons Command at the Rock Island Arsenal, retiring in 1985. He married Patricia E. Howell on May 12, 1953, and together they raised three children, Paul Jr., Nancy and Dan.

He was a Little League coach for both his sons’ teams and an avid bicyclist who rode to and from work for over 20 years. He was also very active as a Sea Scout in his younger days and later as scout master of Troop 43 in Davenport. Paul enjoyed traveling and skiing with his family, and golfing as much as possible. He was a member of CP golf league for 45 years and delighted in having two holes in one. Pat and Paul both enjoyed spending their winters in Florida and summers in Iowa.

Paul is survived by his wife, Patricia; children, Paul Jr. (Kim), Davenport; Nancy E., Cedar Rapids, and Daniel C. (Andrea Montz), Blue Grass; three grandchildren, Jamie Riedesel-Kilker (Steve), Walcott, Iowa; Jeremy Riedesel (Charity Jensen), Davenport, and Matt Riedesel, Davenport, and four great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William.

The name probably came to the US as Seegmüller but ultimately from Sägemüller (saw-miller). Seigmullers lived around Galion, Ohio and it is a reasonable hypothesis that they know the Wheatland-bound Riedesels and others there--hence the move to Clinton County and the ultimate guardianship of their orphaned daughters.
