Born in Althäusers Haus, Wunderthausen. He was the heir, but sold the property and left for America. He applied for emigration on January 23, 1848 and the family arrived in New York on the ship Amazone out of Bremen on May 31, 1848. Presumably they went directly to Crawford County, Ohio.Their daughter, Catherine, was already there and had married J. Ludwig Riedesel in Crawford County, Ohio. In 1852, he and his son, Henry, walked to Clinton County, Iowa, to purchase land. He was a founding member of the German Reformed Church in Wheatland and an Elder. There are inconsistent records of the date of his death, but I rely on the contemporaneous diary of the Rev. Klar. He died without leaving a will.

Born in Petersgrund near Wunderthausen. She and her family came to New York on the ship Amazone out of Bremen on May 31, 1848 and to the Wheatland area around 1851. He died in 1864, and by 1870 she was living with the family of their son, John Henry, in the Spring Rock township near Wheatland.

Her obituary notes that she had 80 grandchildren, of whom 58 were alive at the time, and another 52 living great-grandchildren.

Born in Haase Haus, Wunderthausen. It is almost certain that she was the "M E Alhaus" who arrived in Baltimore in about 1833 with her brother Ludwig as well as some of the Gerhardt family. The obituaries differ on where she and Christian were married, but Baltimore seems more likely. After living for about 40 years in Crawford County, Ohio, they moved to Wheatland to live with their daughter and son-in-law, and that is where they are buried. Her presence in Ohio was what drew her two sisters and their families to the New World. The German community around Wheatland would not have been the same without them.

Known as Louis C. and as "Charley" in the U.S. though his obituary in the Wheatland Gazette calls him "Ludwig Carl." Born in Bergmanns/Gabels Haus in Wunderthausen where he was baptised as "Georg Ludwig." The family story is that he was a soldier in the Franco-Prussian war, but that is not possible as he emigrated in 1867 and that war took place 1870-1871. He presumably participated in the "Danish" war of 1863-64 and/or the Austro-Prussian war of 1866. He belonged to a German veterans association in nearby Lowden, Iowa. Came to America on the ship Humboldt, which traveled from Bremen to New York and landed on May 27, 1867.

They lived in Cedar County near Lowden, which is close to Big Rock as well. He eventually owned at least 160 acres in Section 24 of the Springfield Township (Cedar County). Their son Ernest continued to farm this land, followed by Ernest's sons Ernest and Harold. The farm itself was known locally as the Cambridge farm and they were referred to as the "Cambridge Riedesels."

Known as Katherine. Other sources give her year of birth as 1838, but that is in error. She was born in Wagners Haus, Diedenshausen. Apparently, she and her husband lived in Diedenshausen before going to America. Came on the ship Humbold with her family, which traveled from Bremen to New York and landed on May 27, 1867. Her obituary says she bore 14, three of whom preceded her in death. The 14th was probably an infant whose name has not come down to us.

References to his actual place of birth are inconsistent, but it is likely that it was Ösdorf, now part of the town of Bad Pyrmont in the area of Hanover. Beckmann is a fairly common name, and there are many in Pyrmont today.

DIETRICK BECKMANN, farmer, Sec. 7; P. 0. Wheatland; son of Dietrick and Sophia Beckmann; born July 24, 1853, in Hanover. Germany; his mother died in Germany in 1861, and in 1866; he came with his father to the United States, locating on the farm upon which he now lives, which contains 240 acres, valued at $40 per acre. His father married a Mrs. Christine Acker, whose maiden name was Sittler. in March, 1867; father died Aug. 1,1876. Mr. D. Beckmann, Jr., married Miss Flora Riedesel. daughter of Ludwig and Catharine Riedesel, March 13, 1877; she was born in this county Feb. 27, 1858; have one daughter, Ernestine. Members German Reformed Church; Independent.
