Born in Försters hinter der Huthe in Wunderthausen. Came to the U.S. on April 29, 1882 on the ship "Mosel" out of Bremen, landing in New York. She appears to have been traveling alone. She and her husband moved to Miami from Iowa between 1910 and 1920.

(The Mosel ran aground off Cornwall in September 1882 and was wrecked).

Born in Kurts Haus in Wunderthausen. The records are not clear but it appears that he came to America in 1860 and settled in Pennsylvania. According to one source he died in April 1905 and is buried in the Kizer Cemetery in Jefferson, Pennsylvania, but I can find no record there. He was married to Louise Wagner and had at least three children.

She was born in Wunderthausen in a house called "Dicke" at one point. Came to the U.S. aboard the Prince Frederick Wilhelm out of Bremen, landing in New York on April 30, 1882. Some records show an earlier marriage with Henry Knoche, supposedly of German birth. I cannot locate him.

Thomas Arthur Hood, 84, of West Lafayette, died Saturday, April 11, 2009, at his residence. He was born in San Diego on Dec. 6, 1924, to Beatrice Riedesel Hood and Rev. Dr. Harvey A. Hood. He grew up in Palmdale, Calif., and Phoenix.

He attended MIT until he joined and trained with the Army, but just before he was to be sent to Japan, the war ended. After earning his master's degree at MIT, he joined the George A. Fuller Co. in New York City. During the next several years he was involved in the construction of Manhattanville College in Purchase, N.Y., The Nurses Residence in New York City, The Seagram Building in New York City, and the Rare Books Library at Yale University.

On Nov. 29, 1952, he married Marion Snee, and she survives.

In 1963, he became executive vice president of the Vermont Marble Co. in Proctor, Vt. He had leadership roles in churches, school boards, and membership in other organizations. From 1980 until 1991, he was a professor at Purdue University in the Department of Building Construction and Contracting. He was an elder in Central Presbyterian Church, a lay reader, sang in the choir, and participated in Emergency Aid.

From 1984 until 1994, he and his wife traveled for the International Executive Service Corps in developing countries from Turkey to Zambia. They also traveled by Airstream Trailer with the WALLY BYAM club to Alaska, and independently across the U.S., often with family and to family reunions. He also was active in the Short Story Group at the Purdue Women's Club and at WALLA, where he taught many courses.

Surviving with his wife are their children, Karen Marie Tillberg, Philip Edward Hood and Gwenyth Elise Hood; and a sister, Dorothy Williamson.

Also surviving are grandchildren, Heather Tillberg-Webb, Douglas Tillberg, Daniel Tillberg, Byron Thomas Hood and Adam Steven Hood.

Memorial service 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Central Presbyterian Church in Lafayette. Hippensteel Funeral Service entrusted with care.

The family was apparently missed by the 1870 Census. At one time there was a GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) marker by his grave, but I find no record of him actually serving in the Civil War. There is also an undocumented story that he was an apothecary.

In 1877 he and several others left Wheatland to search for gold in the Black Hills. He returned to Wheatland after three months, but then went to Sacramento in the early 1880s to work. In 1880, he and his brother John were enumerated in Shasta, CA. For about three years, he worked a lead and silver mine in Idaho. In 1884 he returned again to Wheatland. Around 1890 he and his new wife moved to Brandon, Mississippi. They lived there for about ten years but then settled in Norman, Oklahoma Territory, where he worked as a carpenter for most of the balance of his life.
